China Entry Pack 5.1- try the food, know the culture!
Introduction
    Chinese and Westerners have differences in living, culture and food.  Although most of the Chinese dishes are considered to be tasty, there are some exceptions that foreigners cannot bear. To be honest, it is difficult to try the things you consider disgusting, but if you can have a try, you may fall in love with it.  China Entry Pack 5.1, which is the sequel of 5.0, will provide you a list of food that you may consider revolting but it is delicious actually. You should have a try if you want to get involved in Chinese traditional eating culture.

Stinky Tofu
                       -- FEAR RATE: 💔💔💔
    Stinky tofu is juicy and fresh, tender inside and crispy outside, smelling stinky but tasting delicious. In Qing dynasty, a person called Wangzhihe, which is a famous brand right now, firstly invented it. Then, this kind of tofu was widely spreaded, and numerous people love this snack at that time. Cixi, who was a ruler in Qing dynasty for 47 years, love stinky tofu as well and named it “Qing fang ”. At the present, stinky tofu is everywhere, and you can buy it in night markets. No worries about missing it, because you will find it because of its fantastic smell.

Preserved Egg

    Preserved Egg is a kind of egg that is traditionally and uniquely in China. It is popular for its excellent taste, unique flavor and long-guaranteed period. It is also called century egg, because the egg has been preserved using a cover and salt. Hence, it looks like have been buried for a century. It was extremely famous in Ming Dynasty, and it is still popular until now. Although the preserved egg does not look healthy, there are some advantages that preserved egg can bring. It can dispel the effects of alcohol, purge heat, treat toothache,.etc. Preserved egg is available in almost all of the supermarkets in China, and it is normally cooked with Tofu as a savory dish.

Fermented Bean Curd(Furu)
              -- FEAR RATE: 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
    It is a kind of food that has been popular for thousand of years because of its excellent taste and high nutrition.  Fermented bean curd is made of soybean, salt, sugar and rice wine. There are three kinds fermented bean curd, which are white, red and indigo. White Furu was originated from Song dynasty, and is famous for the silky texture and almost transparent surface. Red Furu involves 30 making processes in order to make it be the most traditional fermented bean curd. The indigo one is also called stinky tofu curd, because it smells stinky and taste good. Fermented Bean Curd is usually being eaten with Jiucaihua (leek flower) as the flavoring for hotpot. Although fermented bean curd makes people have no appetite at a glance, if you can have a try you may find it suits your taste.


Beyond the fact that numerous westerners are not suitable with Chinese food, there is some western food that Chinese do not consider it tasty. For example, Cheese has been used a lot in western dish, and there are so many different kinds of it. To the contrary, in China, cheese is rarely used because people are not familiar with it.  Most Chinese consider cheese looks strange and smells awful. Living style and growing up environment can affect one’s eating behavior. Second part will let you know what Chinese considered yuck while westerns love it, and why is that.


Baguette
    Baguette, which is a popular food in French, is not that popular in China. The recipe, which is very simple, is composed yeast, flour, water and salt. There is no sugar or oil in Baguette.  It was originated in the mid nineteenth Century, and served as a side dish until now.


Blue Cheese
Blue Cheese is made of Penicillium Roquefort or Penicillium Glaucum. Centuries ago, some cheese was stored in the cold and damp caves, and then glaucous mould formed naturally, giving a unique taste to the cheese. Afterwards, people add mold spores deliberately in order to give people that taste. It is considered to be the western stinky Tofu, because both of them have a strange smell, but taste good.
